Accounts & Access

Different types of access, such as system access, network access, application access, or data access, are granted accordingly to ensure that individuals have the necessary privileges to fulfill their specific roles effectively.

Submit a request for access using CLA Computing Resources Access Request Form (click “Request Service” in the upper right-hand corner).  Information to include on the request:

  • The name of the file share drive or remote resource (wts or compute.cla).  Your adviser, lab manager, or supervisor should have this information for you.
  • The name of the person who is the head of the lab, usually a faculty member or a lab manager. This person will need to approve your access.

Access for Others

If a visiting scholar, an alum, or an interested community member needs access to UMN research file shares or computing environments, there are some options for other Internet ID (for MSI access, see below). Faculty and staff can set up accounts for non-UMN colleagues or former students who are no longer active, see a UMN Sponsored Account through My-Account

Notes:  A sponsored account will not give access to the library.  Library privileges for non-University people can be obtained by joining the Friends of the Library.

Nor will a sponsored account give access to UMN MSI Data. Please contact the Chair's Office Assistant and request a "Person of Interest" (unpaid) appointment for any continuation of access to UMN MSI data.

If you want your colleague to have a U Card along with the sponsored account, please see these instructions.

Depending on the nature of any ongoing collaboration, UMN's Box is a useful way to share documents with nearly anyone. No special account is required on the part of the external collaborator; just set up a Box Folder, and Share it.

Leaving the UMN/Role

When you depart from your position/role, your access will be reassessed. For further information regarding the termination of your UMN accounts, please refer to the Account Termination Reference Guide.

Also, CLA's  LATIS has developed "TTFN," a tool for discovering and reviewing shared Google Drive documents during staffing or working transitions.

Make Me Admin

Make Me Admin is an application that will allow users to use their Internet ID and password to temporarily elevate their privileges to an administrator on a specific computer.  This application can be installed on your computer by OIT if you have a business need.  See the Make Me Admin: Use Admin Rights page for more information.
