Journal Club - The effects of a role model intervention on women’s STEM outcomes

1 month 2 weeks ago

Welcome to the March edition of Pedagogical Innovations Journal Club.

Female role models show promise for inoculating women against the harmful impact of stereotypes impugning their ability in science, technology, engineering, and math. The authors conducted a test of a role model intervention, in which participants engaged in a reflective writing exercise designed to increase identification with STEM role models. Women who completed this exercise showed greater change in implicit and explicit stereotypes compared to women who were exposed to STEM role models, but did not engage in reflection. Among women exposed to role models, role model identification was negatively related to explicit stereotypes and positively related to STEM outcomes including GPA in STEM courses.

Diversifying Curricula and Course Content

2 months 1 week ago

As part of the Inclusive Teaching at a Predominantly White Institution Workshop Series, in this 90-minute interactive workshop participants will learn how to audit course content and curricula using a 3-part framework that presents possible approaches to this work. Participants will also examine their discipline's approach to knowledge and consider disciplinary knowledges as "situated."

This 6-workshop series explores inclusive teaching by focusing on racial and Indigenous dynamics. We will explore the context of the UMN as a Predominantly White Institution (PWI) and its implications for classroom climate, equitable pedagogy, diversifying course content, and equitable assessments. The first workshop on Pedagogy Basics will provide a refresher on tools and practices that will be referenced in the following workshops.

Toward Equitable Pedagogical Practices

This 90-minute interactive workshop webinar is part of the Inclusive Teaching at a Predominantly White Institution Workshop Series. Equitable pedagogical practices require challenging the assumption that there is a set of fixed "best practices" for all teaching contexts. Rather, participants will be guided to diversify their teaching methods as well as to examine their teaching through the lens of BIPOC students' experiences in their courses. Participants will increase their awareness of how dynamics of race and Indigeneity affect discussion and other learning experiences.
