All faculty, staff, and students who handle private data are required under University policy to complete training in data privacy and security practices.
University Policy on Data Privacy and Security
How can I sign up people in my research lab for training?
The UM UIS (University Information Services) and the UM HIPAA compliance offices have announced two new courses to replace the former four courses required for data security training.
The two new courses are offered through ULearn
- (PJPD16) University Information Security Awareness Training
- (HIPAA16) HIPAA Training Information on this change and information on how to access this training can be seen here.
What about Human Subject training?
If you work directly with human subjects, you may need to complete training in the Responsible Conduct of Research - (RC4104) RCR Core-Social & Behavioral Sciences. You can access this through ULearn. You may have to report your completion to the UM Institutional Review Board. Completion of the RCR core curriculum is a requirement for new faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and others who receive funding for research and scholarship.
You may also be required to complete additional training. For complete instructions go here.
What about data privacy for student grades? For anyone working with student grades, a tutorial on FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) should be completed: go to ULearn, sign in and enter "FERPA" in the search box. (SA1523) PJPD - FERPA
